Unexpected northbound
Title:  Unexpected northbound
Description:  I set up alongside Mansfield Road to see if anything happened along. In amazingly short order, I heard the distant wail of an airhorn... but to my surprise, it was coming from the south! A moment later this northbound unit coal train roared past on the normally south-only Rabbit Line, with KCS/BNSF power up front, and CN/BNSF pushers in back.

Title:  Northbound surprise
Description:  Something I haven't seen in years -- a northbound train on the old Southern Pacific Rabbit Line. BNSF #5664 and company are at the Baird Road grade crossing, headed into town with a very long unit coal train. I can only guess that something was wrong with the UP's usual northbound line from Houston.

Title:  Down and up
Description:  The stretch of the Rabbit Line where I watched countless Southern Pacific freights roll in and out of Shreveport between 1985 and 1992. At night the old Espee oscilating Mars lights would eerily illuminate the surrounding trees, even before the train had even come into view, and more than anything they sent a clear message into the darkness: something is coming; get out of the way! The modern ditch lights just don't come close. I am still fascinated by the long downward and upward arc of the tracks as it crosses the Crabapple Street grade crossing.

Description:  If I am heading towards downtown, I often will take Mansfield Road instead of the highway, just for the pleasure of driving alongside the old Rabbit Line and the off chance of catching a train. It paid off this time. I had maybe 1 minute from seeing the headlights to pull over and set up.
